Manchester United may still consider the possibility of re-signing Angel Gomes this summer, as the dynamics between the club and the former player have been described as “one to watch.”
The 24-year-old departed United on a free transfer when his contract ended in 2020 and has since made a significant impact in Ligue 1 with Lille.
His contract with the French club will conclude at the end of this season, and with the midfielder not intending to extend his stay, he will again be available on a free transfer, this time as an established international rather than a budding talent.
Gomes made his debut for England under interim manager Lee Carsley and impressed on the international scene, although he was not selected in Thomas Tuchel’s initial squad as the new Three Lions manager.
In domestic competitions, the Carrington academy graduate has recorded 10 goals and 19 assists in 134 appearances for Lille, showcasing his abilities as a deep-lying playmaker while also demonstrating versatility across the midfield.
He has long been regarded as a viable option for Ruben Amorim, who has shown interest in bringing him back to United as he seeks to inject new energy into the midfield, where the 33-year-old duo of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have shown signs of reduced dynamism.
Gomes’ performances have even drawn comparisons to midfield stalwarts Rodri and Frenkie de Jong.
Earlier this month, it was reported that the Red Devils were “unlikely” to pursue Gomes this summer; however, journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking to GIVEMESPORT, indicated that fans should not “discount” the possibility of his signing.
Given his strong reputation and the absence of a transfer fee, competition for his signature is expected to be intense, with West Ham United reportedly having already faced rejection in their pursuit.
Tottenham Hotspur are said to be near the front of the queue for the midfielder, who was born in London, but Jacobs indicates that they don’t have him tied up just yet.
“I still wouldn’t discount Manchester United making a move to re-sign Gomes, and that could also be one to watch,” he said.
“So we can’t yet say that Spurs have got a clear run at Gomes, but they’re one of the clubs that are firmly interested.
“And I’d be surprised if West Ham succeed with their offer, despite the relatively lucrative finances on offer.”
