United coach raves about goal machine, claims he has that “healthy arrogance” that separates the best from the rest

Manchester United experienced disappointment in the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup on Monday, as they faced Aston Villa, who ultimately triumphed in a penalty shootout.

In a strategic move, Adam Lawrence altered his lineup from the impressive quarter-final victory over Arsenal, reintroducing Chido Obi to the U18 squad following his brief appearances with the senior team.

The 17-year-old participated in the entire match but was unable to score and appeared somewhat out of form for much of the game. Nevertheless, the U18 coach expressed high regard for the former Arsenal prospect.

When asked to characterize the type of striker the Dane is, Lawrence remarked to The Athletic, “He’s a challenging opponent. He possesses a unique confidence that sets him apart.”

Chido praise

His confident determination is evident as he expresses a desire to compete at the highest level and continuously enhance his skills. This attitude has certainly made a positive impact on the team.

Despite facing a temporary challenge, Chido Obi has already caught the attention of analysts and former players through his performances as a substitute, particularly in the FA Cup match against Fulham.

This self-assuredness is reflected in the striker’s ability to effectively utilize his physical strength during confrontations with opposing defenders.

Having already earned four senior caps, it is likely that Ruben Amorim would have included him in the matchday squad for the Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest, had it not been for the game against Villa.

Onto bigger things

The Denmark U21 international has already scored 12 goals this season across various age group teams and is regarded as a “natural goalscorer.”

Amorim has expressed high regard for Chido Obi, noting that he possesses the innate qualities that all exceptional strikers exhibit within the penalty area.

“You can sense that he desires the ball when he’s in the box—an attribute that defines true strikers, and he embodies that.”

It is hoped that the Danish prodigy can quickly move past this setback and finish the season strongly with the senior team.

During the pre-season, he will need to impress Amorim sufficiently to secure a place as a regular starter. With Rasmus Hojlund facing challenges and United yet to find a striker in the market, Chido Obi certainly has an opportunity to establish himself.
