Manchester United made it three Premier League games without a win as they lost 4-1 to Newcastle on Sunday.
Alexander Isak teed up Sandro Tonali to hand the home side the lead after some sloppy play from Manuel Ugarte gifted Newcastle possession in a dangerous area.
Alejandro Garnacho brought United level with a composed finish after he’d been played through by Diogo Dalot but Newcastle regained the advantage early in the second half through Harvey Barnes.
Barnes doubled his account shortly after the hour mark as Noussair Mazraoui was robbed of possession and the Newcastle forward finished confidently to make it 3-1.
Altay Bayindir deputised in Andre Onana’s absence and his shocking clearance led to Bruno Guimaraes extending his side’s lead.
Here are how the players rated at St James’ Park:
Altay Bayindir
Made a decent save from Isak on the rebound and handled some crosses reasonably well and others unconvincingly. Then his weak kick resulted in a goal for Bruno Guimaraes. He won’t start against Lyon. 5
Noussair Mazraoui
Had a calm and consistent first half but then slipped to gift Barnes the ball for the contest-killing goal. 5
Victor Lindelof
Like Mazraoui, he was not overwhelmed until the hour mark. Lindelof inexcusably failed to close down Barnes for his second goal. 5
Leny Yoro
Did not cover himself in glory for the second Barnes goal. An overall decent performance and played on for longer than maybe he should have. 5
Diogo Dalot
Did well for Alejandro Garnacho’s goal but was far too easily bypassed for Barnes to put Newcastle ahead again. On the back foot in the second half. 5
Manuel Ugarte
A poorer performance than in Lyon. Amorim was often on his case and he played United into trouble for the first goal. A mismatch against Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes. 3
Christian Eriksen
Started by default as United had no other match-fit midfielder to come in and give Casemiro a rest. Often off the pace amid the intensity. 4
Harry Amass
Did not look remotely out of his depth and drew applause from Ruben Amorim for his intent. A level of performance that suggested his full debut should have come sooner. 6
Alejandro Garnacho
Was a lightweight among heavyweights until he coolly claimed his tenth goal of the season. Substituted early in the first half to save him for Lyon. 6
Bruno Fernandes
Constantly demanding and endeavoured to maintain a high tempo but too many teammates were nowhere near his level of purpose. 6
Joshua Zirkzee
United opted for a long-ball strategy with Zirkzee but he was silkier on the deck. It was through a sprint that he pulled his hamstring. Had a good chance saved. 6
Subs
Patrick Dorgu
Had little momentum going forward. 5
Mason Mount
No impact. 5
Rasmus Hojlund
No threat. 4
Luke Shaw
First appearance in four-and-a-half months. 5
Kobbie Mainoo
Late entrant. 5
Manager
Sensibly rotated the team ahead of the second leg with Lyon and United played a clear and consistent style even with five changes. Second-half substitutes, while understandable, handed Newcastle the initiative. 5
