Manchester United will face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals of the Europa League.
It’s been a case of Europa League or bust for some time for United, with their domestic campaign effectively ended by an FA Cup penalty shootout defeat to Fulham in March. They are 14th in the Premier League table and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Tottenham in December.
Despite their domestic woes, their form in Europe has offered some encouragement. Ruben Amorim’s side are unbeaten in their 12 Europa League outings this season and are through to the semi-finals of the competition after Thursday’s victory over Lyon.
Having drawn 2-2 in the quarter-final first leg in Lyon, United won 5-4 at Old Trafford in the return leg to book their place in the last four.
United took the lead early on as Alejandro Garnacho’s excellent play ended in a cut-back for Manuel Ugarte and the Uruguayan made no mistake from close range. Diogo Dalot fired United into a two-goal lead on the stroke of half-time.
