Like Ten Hag did in FA Cup final: Amorim could axe £38m flop from starting XI vs Tottenham

On May 21, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will square off in the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao.

In the final, United manager Ruben Amorim might follow in the footsteps of his predecessor Erik ten Hag and make a daring substitution.

Rasmus Hojlund was left out of the starting lineup by the Dutch coach during last year’s 2-1 FA Cup victory over Manchester City.

Hojlund made a fleeting appearance off the bench as Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay led the line in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Even though the Denmark international had improved his goal-scoring abilities in the latter part of the season, Ten Hag still rejected him.

Given his dreadfully bad condition, Hojlund should expect yet another rejection from Amorim.

With just four Premier League goals in 31 games, the £38 million striker has had a terrible 2024–25 season.

With just four Premier League goals in 31 games, the £38 million striker has had a terrible 2024–25 season.

There are more issues besides his lack of objectives. His incapacity to sustain play and the ease with which defenders intimidate him during duels are the greater problems.

If Amorim were to bench Hojlund and start Kobbie Mainoo in the number nine position, we wouldn’t be shocked.

Against Crystal Palace in February, the Portuguese head coach had already tried Mainoo in the number nine position.

Alejandro Garnacho had an early opportunity thanks to the 20-year-old, who also struck the woodwork.

After the break, his impact diminished, underscoring the fact that he is not United’s long-term center-forward option.

With his attacking flair, Mainoo might help United break through Spurs’ defense.

Given that Tottenham’s backline is expected to be led by Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, Hojlund might find it difficult to compete with their strength and speed.

However, Mainoo might drop into deeper pockets, pull a center-back out of form, and open up space for United’s wingers to exploit.

Winning the Europa League will not erase United’s dramatic domestic downfall, but it will at least guarantee Champions League football next season.
