On Friday night, United lost 1-0 against Chelsea, their 18th league loss of the year.
With just two points from their last seven games, Ruben Amorim’s team, currently in 16th place, has been the Premier League’s lowest since April 1.
That is less than Southampton, who have already been relegated, and United hasn’t scored in any of their last three home games.
Preparations for the Europa League final, which is United’s sole chance to qualify for European football the following season, have at least partially made up for their subpar performances.
With Amorim experimenting with some of his Premier League squad selections, the winner of Wednesday’s final between United and Tottenham, who currently sit 17th in the league, will play in the Champions League the following season.
However, as the upcoming season approaches, supporters’ worries regarding some players have grown.
Rasmus Hojlund is one such; according to The Telegraph, United is willing to sell him during the summer transfer window in order to pay for Amorim’s reconstruction.
The Dane only has four Premier League goals this season despite spending £72 million to join United from Atalanta in 2023.
Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News has stated that the striker’s lack of goals this season is making members of the coaching staff ‘lose patience’ with him.
However, Amorim has openly supported the striker and has refused to bench him. Even if, as anticipated, a new center forward is recruited, a solid showing in the final might put him firmly in the manager’s plans for the upcoming campaign, given that he has six goals in the Europa League this season.
According to Luckhurst, Hojlund was grumbling to teammate Victor Lindelof at Stamford Bridge following the full-time whistle, and his body language was “disconcerting.”
The Dane may have every reason to be disappointed. This season, he has only had 567 touches of the ball in the Premier League, compared to 304 other players who have touched the ball more frequently.
Signing in January Despite having 20 less appearances than Hojlund, Patrick Dorgu has only had eight fewer touches than him; yet, this may be a sign of how crucial it is becoming for wing-backs to get on the ball and influence play in Amorim’s system.
However, the outcome of Wednesday’s match in Bilbao can be crucial for Hojlund’s future at Old Trafford.
