Arsenal now favourites to sign £71m star before Liverpool, 20 goals/assists this season – report

As reported by Football Insider, Arsenal has surpassed Liverpool in the competition to acquire Inter Milan forward Marcus Thuram during the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Gunners are anticipated to make significant investments at the conclusion of the season, with securing a top-tier striker being their primary focus. Additionally, the club may consider acquiring a versatile forward.

Thuram would be an ideal candidate for this role, and Football Insider suggests that Arsenal currently holds an advantage over Arne Slot’s team in their efforts to sign the French player, who has a release clause set at £71 million.

In the meantime, Inter Milan has initiated discussions regarding a new long-term contract and is committed to taking all necessary measures to retain their valuable player in the next transfer window.

Top-class

Thuram joined the Serie A champions in 2023 on a free transfer from Borussia Monchengladbach. Last season, he scored 15 goals and provided 6 assists as a striker, and he appears poised to surpass those figures in the current season.

The former Guingamp player has already netted 16 goals and contributed 4 assists, with two months remaining in the season. He has primarily played in a forward partnership with Lautaro Martinez, although he has also spent considerable time on the left wing throughout his extensive career.

His adaptability may attract the attention of prominent European clubs. Arsenal has reportedly shown interest in acquiring the skilled forward; however, it is uncertain whether the club’s management will be willing to invest significantly in him, especially as he approaches his 28th birthday in August.

The Gunners might lean towards investing in younger talents with greater potential for growth. One player that comes to mind is Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao, who is capable of playing on either wing. At just 22 years old, he is expected to improve with experience.

In terms of a centre-forward, the London club could consider making a move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, having previously attempted to sign him last summer. The 21-year-old has a release clause ranging from £59 million to £67 million.
