Arsenal set to open new contract talks with Saka

Arsenal is poised to initiate formal discussions with Bukayo Saka regarding a new contract as the forward approaches the final two years of his existing agreement. Saka has been sidelined since December due to a significant hamstring injury sustained during a match against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, which ultimately necessitated surgical intervention.

Despite his absence, Saka’s value to Mikel Arteta’s squad is indisputable, prompting the club to engage with the player’s representatives about a potential contract extension. Arsenal aims to eliminate any ambiguity surrounding the future of their star player and considers securing Saka on a longer-term deal a top priority.

The 23-year-old England international signed his current contract, reportedly worth at least £10 million per season, in 2022. This agreement is set to expire at the conclusion of the 2026-27 season, and preliminary steps to commence substantive negotiations have already been taken. It is anticipated that these discussions will gain momentum in the near future.

European clubs will be keenly observing the progression of these talks, as Saka is widely regarded as one of the premier attacking talents in European football. Prior to signing his current contract, Saka attracted interest from Manchester City, and should negotiations falter, it is likely that other suitors will emerge.

However, Arsenal remains optimistic about reaching a consensus, especially given their rise as title contenders under Arteta, along with their ongoing participation in the Champions League, which may further incentivize Saka to extend his stay with the club.

Currently, Saka is concentrating on his long-anticipated recovery following his hamstring surgery. After the victory against Chelsea on Sunday, manager Arteta indicated that Saka has a favorable chance of making a return shortly after the ongoing international break. Arsenal’s upcoming match is scheduled against Fulham at the Emirates Stadium on April 1.

Saka is not the only player at Arsenal facing the final two years, or less, of their existing contracts. Midfielders Thomas Partey and Jorginho are both set to become free agents at the end of the season and are expected to depart the Emirates this summer, barring any changes. Leandro Trossard, who has engaged in discussions regarding a new contract, is under contract until the summer of 2026.

Importantly, Saka, William Saliba, and Gabriel Magalhaes—who are all vital to Arteta’s plans—have contracts that will expire in 2027. Regarding his contract situation, Saliba mentioned earlier this month that formal negotiations for a new agreement have not yet commenced, but he expressed his contentment, stating, “For me, I’m really happy here. I’m happy here and I want to continue here.” Magalhaes has also been in discussions about an extension, and it is reported that the Brazil international has attracted interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia.
