Chelsea ready to offer £79 million for Manchester United talent

We are currently approaching the final months of the 2024/25 season, and teams are preparing their strategies for the upcoming summer transfer window.

Manchester United is keen to secure new signings, as they aim to make significant strides in the next season. However, it is also anticipated that they will part ways with several players in order to maintain financial stability.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a minority shareholder of Manchester United, has already warned that the club may face serious financial difficulties by the end of the season, potentially leading to a cash shortfall. Consequently, the Red Devils will likely need to sell some of their young and key players to generate funds and achieve profitability.

Chelsea wants to sign Kobbie Mainoo

Spanish news outlet Fichajes has indicated that Chelsea is preparing to make a £79 million bid for Kobbie Mainoo during the forthcoming summer transfer window.

Discussions regarding the potential sale of the 19-year-old have taken place, and given the club’s financial limitations, Manchester United may consider selling him to secure a substantial profit by the end of the season.

Mainoo, along with fellow academy talent Alejandro Garnacho, is among the young players who could depart the club this summer.

Conversely, other reports suggest that United is keen to retain their 19-year-old star and has proposed a new contract to him.

Mainoo is seeking a weekly salary of £180,000 in his new agreement, but United is unwilling to meet this demand, as it represents a significant increase from his current wage of £20,000 per week. Consequently, he and his representatives have turned down all offers from the club.

Will the Red Devils need to sell him?

If Mainoo does not consent to a new contract, the club will seek to transfer him for a substantial profit during the summer, which brings Chelsea into consideration. The Blues are keen on acquiring more young talent, particularly a midfielder, as they have observed a lack of progress with Romeo Lavia.

Mainoo exhibits remarkable composure and technical skill. He is adept at resisting pressure and can maneuver past defenders effortlessly in confined areas. At just 19 years old, he excels in his passing, enabling him to penetrate tightly organized defenses.

Additionally, Mainoo contributes defensively, disrupting the flow of the game and thwarting opposing attacks. He remains composed under pressure and performs exceptionally well in both deep-lying and box-to-box roles. These attributes, combined with his youth, position him as an attractive prospect for Chelsea.

Thus far in the 2024/25 Premier League season, Mainoo has participated in 18 matches and has an expected goals (xG) of 0.5. Manchester United will be reluctant to part with such a promising young talent.

Ultimately, the decision hinges on whether Mainoo agrees to a new contract. Should he decline, the Red Devils may have no choice but to sell him for a profit and consider Chelsea’s offer.
