Chelsea has reportedly finalized an agreement to acquire Sporting CP midfielder Dario Essugo on the same day they secured his fellow countryman Geovany Quenda, who was previously linked to Manchester United.
Earlier on Friday, news broke that Chelsea successfully signed Quenda, who was heavily associated with a move to United and was expected to reunite with Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford this summer.
However, Quenda will not join Chelsea immediately; he is set to connect with the club in 2026, having signed a seven-year contract.
Additionally, it has been reported that Quenda is not the only player from Sporting that Chelsea has managed to secure from United’s interest. According to CNN Portugal, Enzo Maresca’s team has also completed a deal for Dario Essugo, who was noted as a target for the Red Devils.
A prior report from The Peoples Person indicated that United was pursuing Essugo. The 20-year-old is currently on loan at Las Palmas from Sporting, where he has been a consistent presence for the relegation-threatened La Liga team, making 17 appearances this season and scoring once.
Essugo has garnered attention for his commanding performances in midfield and has even attracted interest from clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona. His average of 4.8 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes is the highest among regular midfielders in La Liga this season.
CNN Portugal reports that the United target is expected to arrive in West London this summer and will sign a seven-year contract, with Chelsea set to pay €22 million for his services.
This information has been confirmed by A Bola, which stated, “Deal done. Dario Essugo will be a Chelsea player next season. The transfer with the Blues was finalized in the last few hours, with the Lions receiving a fixed €25 million (excluding variables).
“This is a significant payment for the defensive midfielder, who was developed at Alvalade and has been in excellent form this season at the Spanish club Las Palmas.”
Nevertheless, it certainly seems like Chelsea have beat United to the services of the highly rated youngster.
