Prospective Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has expressed the club’s interest in Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios, as exclusively reported by TBR Football.
Berta is set to join Arsenal in anticipation of a significant summer investment at the Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Arteta’s team continues to have deficiencies, particularly in the goal-scoring department, where they are in need of a reliable striker.
In this context, Berta has discussed the possibility of acquiring Matheus Cunha, but the Gunners’ recruitment efforts will extend beyond just securing a new forward this summer.
Berta has compiled a list of potential signings for the Emirates and maintains a strong appreciation for one midfielder from his tenure at Atletico.
Andrea Berta seriously impressed by Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios
TBR Football’s chief correspondent, Graeme Bailey, reports that Berta maintains a strong admiration for Atletico midfielder Barrios, stemming from their previous collaboration in Spain.
The 21-year-old Barrios has made 31 appearances this season under the management of Diego Simeone, starting in both matches of their recent Champions League knockout tie against Real Madrid.
Due to his impressive performances with Atletico, Barrios earned his first cap for Spain towards the end of 2024, joining a squad that included David Raya and Mikel Merino.
Arsenal has shown interest in Barrios for an extended period, and Berta, upon joining the club, expressed positive sentiments regarding the midfielder.
It remains uncertain whether the Italian will attempt to recruit his former associate to north London; however, it is clear that he holds Barrios in high esteem.
It is important to mention that Barrios has a release clause set at €100 million (£84 million) with Atletico, a figure that Arsenal is unlikely to consider.
Martin Zubimendi remains Arsenal’s top target
Martin Zubimendi continues to be Arsenal’s primary midfield target this summer, with discussions regarding his potential signing ongoing, particularly as Berta’s appointment approaches.
Arsenal aims to secure Zubimendi swiftly this summer, anticipating competition from other prominent European clubs.
Additionally, Barros remains an intriguing prospect that Arsenal has been monitoring for several months, and Berta’s arrival is unlikely to alter this assessment.
The club is also interested in Sverre Nypan, an 18-year-old talent from Rosenborg, who evidently possesses significant potential.
Furthermore, Arsenal is actively exploring other options, with Barrios being one player they are closely observing for future opportunities.
