Greenwood ‘isn’t coming back’ under De Zerbi in £31m Man Utd boost as Marseille wheels fall off

Mason Greenwood will not be returning to Marseille, as Robert De Zerbi’s management of the former Manchester United player has faced criticism in France.

Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United following allegations of domestic violence and subsequently joined Getafe on loan for the 2023/2024 season. His performance in La Liga has attracted interest from several prominent European clubs.

Marseille secured his services for €26 million, and the transfer has proven beneficial, with Greenwood scoring 16 goals and providing three assists in 28 matches across all competitions, helping Roberto De Zerbi’s team contend for Champions League qualification.

However, Greenwood was sidelined for two consecutive matches against Lens and PSG. In explaining his choice, De Zerbi criticized the forward’s perceived lack of commitment.

De Zerbi stated, “No one respects him more than I do. However, that does not alter my expectations: I require more from him. He needs to elevate his performance, as what he is currently delivering is insufficient.

“To fulfill his ambition of becoming a champion, he must demonstrate greater consistency, make more sacrifices, and exhibit increased determination.”

Manchester United is looking to generate funds for a significant summer overhaul, and recent developments concerning Greenwood could provide a financial boost, as they hold a 50% sell-on clause. They could potentially earn around £31 million, especially with interest from PSG.

De Zerbi dismissed rumors of Greenwood’s departure ahead of the match against Reims, emphasizing his admiration for the player before reinstating him in the starting lineup.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also noted that there have been no discussions regarding a summer transfer.

He stated, “There are many rumors, but nothing has been finalized for Greenwood at this point. There are no negotiations with other clubs.”

Nevertheless, Greenwood’s return did not improve Marseille’s situation, as the Ligue 1 team suffered their third consecutive defeat, allowing Monaco to surpass them into second place in the standings and raising concerns about their ability to maintain their position.

Nice and Lille are currently just two points behind Marseille, while Strasbourg trails them by one point.

Following the 3-1 defeat to Reims, who are positioned 15th, After Foot columnist Daniel Riolo criticized De Zerbi’s handling of Greenwood. He asserted that the United academy graduate “isn’t coming back” and is “no longer present,” likely referring to his desire to leave after being sidelined.

Riolo stated: “You face Reims, a team that struggles to win… You lose 1-0 due to a questionable decision, but in this case, you conceded three goals, which continues a poor streak. Greenwood isn’t returning; he’s no longer part of the team. De Zerbi’s approach with Greenwood is ineffective.”
