‘He’s what they need!’ – Gary Lineker tells Man Utd to re-sign former midfielder who would ‘work in Ruben Amorim’s system’

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The fact that the Red Devils could register pure profit from selling their former Academy player played a key role in getting the £25 million ($34m) move over the line last summer. However, maybe things would have been different had Amorim been at the helm; clearly the Portuguese tactician is unhappy with the midfield players at his disposal, with Bruno Fernandes the only one to have consistently performed in the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, McTominay’s displays in Serie A have been excellent, and Napoli are mounting a serious charge for the title.

WHAT LINEKER SAID

“Scott McTominay, scored two more goals, one of them a beauty, for Napoli at the beginning of the week. It’s remarkable how well some of the [former] United players are doing,” Lineker said on his podcast The Rest Is Football. “McTominay is exactly the player, I would say, that would work in an Amorim system. He’s what they need. And I know they were forced to sell him because of this PSR and he’s a local lad, which we all think is a nonsensical and a ridiculous feature of this particular rule.”
