I am a Man United legend – but visiting Old Trafford is now difficult for one reason

Manchester United fans remember Wayne Rooney fondly, but visiting the Theatre of Dreams has become difficult for him.

Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney said that the current squad’s poor form makes it tough for him to return to Old Trafford.

Rooney’s spell at United was one of the club’s most successful, with the striker scoring 253 goals in 559 appearances. That ability in front of goal earned him four club player of the year awards, as well as five Premier League titles, the Champions League, and a slew of other accolades.

However, since his departure from Old Trafford for his childhood club Everton, things have deteriorated drastically for United, to the point where they are now a shell of the fearsome force that once dominated the English game. Unbelievably, United have reached a new low this season.

After a poor start to the season under Erik ten Hag, Ineos sacked the Dutchman and replaced him with Sporting head coach Ruben Amorim. The current United side has taken some time to adjust to the Portuguese’s 3-4-2-1 formation, and they have failed to score points during that period.

On Sunday, Rooney went to Old Trafford for United’s fifth-round match against Fulham and was asked by Gary Lineker in the Match of the Day studio if he missed playing in the Theatre of Dreams. “Of course, the memories I have had over the years here, I, of course miss it.” He went on:

“It is difficult to come here now and enjoy it because the results and performances have not been great but it is always a special place to come back to.” Rooney is presently looking for his next football opportunity after being released by Championship team Plymouth Argyle on New Year’s Eve.
