Ruben Amorim knows the Manchester derby is a “massive game” but he “expects to win.”
Manchester United welcome Manchester City to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, and they are looking to do the Premier League double over their rivals for the first time since 2019/2020
Amad turned the Manchester derby in December on its head in the final minutes of the game, but the winger is currently sidelined with an ankle injury and won’t be available this weekend.
United lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night and need to bounce back from that defeat. Kobbie Mainoo is in contention to return to the squad after recovering from a muscle injury, although Matthijs de Ligt is a doubt after rolling his ankle against Nottingham Forest.
When asked about his expectations for the derby, Amorim responded: “I expect to win. That is really important. Of course we know that it’s going to be a massive game. I know the environment, I felt it against Arsenal and I will feel it even more before the game from our fans.
“We just want to play well and be really competitive. That is really important for us and our fans, we know that, and we want to win to improve our position in the table.
“I’m not focussed on that [league double over City], when you coach a club like Manchester United, you cannot be focussed on winning two times, our focus is on improving, to go up in the table and win games.
“I also know that the environment is going to be really good and we want to give that to our fans.”
