Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount is poised to resume training after a three-month absence, as reported by Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic.
Since his transfer to Old Trafford, Mount’s tenure at United has been plagued by persistent injuries. He has struggled to deliver the anticipated performance levels, leading to perceptions of him as a somewhat unsuccessful acquisition thus far. The English midfielder last featured for the Red Devils in December during the Manchester derby, where he was substituted in the first half and has not played since.
Whitwell indicates that Mount is now on track to return to first-team training following his extended layoff. The club has exercised caution with the 26-year-old, carefully monitoring his recovery, although he is not yet ready to make a return to competitive action.
While it is anticipated that Mount will not be available for United’s second-leg match against Real Sociedad on Thursday, his impending return is nonetheless a positive development for the team. Manager Amorim will be eager to integrate Mount back into the squad, having had limited opportunities to utilize the former Chelsea player since taking over from Erik ten Hag late last year.
Mount’s dynamic play and technical skills suggest that he could be a valuable asset in one of the attacking midfield positions within the team’s system. However, the primary concern remains his fitness. Notably, his injury issues have predominantly arisen since joining United, contrasting with his availability during his time at Chelsea.
In recent years, Manchester United has faced increasing injury challenges, with players such as Lisandro Martinez, Amad Diallo, and Kobbie Mainoo currently sidelined. Amorim will be keen to see key players return as the season progresses, particularly if the team continues its journey in the Europa League. Although United’s prospects in most competitions appear bleak, there remains an opportunity to salvage their season in European play.
