Manchester United remains “fully committed” to acquiring Nico Williams this summer, despite facing competition from Arsenal and other prominent clubs, as reported.
The Red Devils are experiencing a challenging season, currently positioned 14th in the Premier League with only ten matches remaining. Under the management of Ruben Amorim, the team has secured just five victories out of 17 league matches, with performances falling short compared to those under former coach Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed at the end of October.
Amorim has encountered difficulties in getting his players to adapt to his tactical approach and philosophy, and he was limited to a single signing during the January transfer window, bringing in Patrick Dorgu. It is evident that the current squad does not align with the tactics Amorim intends to implement, making the upcoming summer transfer window crucial for providing him with the necessary players.
Recent reports from Spain indicate that Manchester United is “fully committed” to pursuing an ambitious deal for Athletic Bilbao winger Williams, who recently celebrated victory at Euro 2024. The Spanish international continues to attract interest after delivering a standout performance in Bilbao’s 3-1 Europa League triumph over Roma, where he scored two goals.
Williams has reportedly made the decision to leave, as numerous top European clubs have shown interest in meeting his release clause, which is believed to be set at €58 million. Clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Juventus have all expressed interest, but now “a new suitor has emerged.”
Manchester United is now in the mix to sign the Spanish winger, who has become a “priority target” as Amorim seeks to undertake a significant overhaul of the squad at Old Trafford. This development follows earlier reports suggesting that Arsenal had “practically already agreed everything” for Williams’ transfer this summer, after their victory over Real Sociedad on Thursday night, which secured their place in the quarter-finals.
On Mount, Amorim said: “I think he is going to [be on] the bench.
“We will see, but we need every player and if he is fit, I am going to play him. He cannot play too many minutes, just five minutes of Mason Mount is perfect.”
When asked about how much he’s looking forward to having Mount back, Amorim replied: “I already said, I really love Mason Mount. I see him and I know how he suffers.
“He does everything right. He eats right, his physical aspect is perfect, he is trying too much and maybe he is thinking too much about everything. He was European champion, he is a talent and he is a really talented player.
“When a player does everything like he does, he will always have the support of everybody here in the club.
“So we will try to manage the load and you already saw some players who have a lot of problems during one time, in some moments, he can stay fit and I believe a lot in Mason Mount and we need players like Mason Mount.”
