Manchester United has included young talents James Scanlon and Tyler Fredericson in their Europa League squad for the upcoming match against Real Sociedad on Thursday evening, as announced by the club.
In the first leg of the Round of 16 tie in Spain, the Red Devils managed a 1-1 draw, with manager Ruben Amorim compelled to rely on a restricted bench comprised mainly of academy players due to the ongoing injury crisis affecting the team.
As they prepare for the second leg at Old Trafford, Amorim has opted to incorporate additional young players into his selection options.
Man Utd Add Scanlon to Squad
Likely to be in match-day squad tonight
Due to limited options across the pitch, Amorim has decided to bolster the squad by adding a young midfielder and a defender in preparation for Thursday night’s match.
Scanlon, noted for his recent outstanding performances with the youth team and labeled as ‘unstoppable,’ presents a valuable option for the midfield and can also function as one of the attacking midfielders in Amorim’s tactical setup.
Fredricson, a central defender who has served as captain of the Under-19 team this season, has been included in the squad following injuries to both Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro, who will miss the game.
Noussair Mazraoui has occasionally stepped in as a centre-back, while Victor Lindelof has also recently been recalled to the squad, as Amorim seeks effective solutions for his team.
Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo are unavailable for Manchester United’s midfield, creating an opportunity for Scanlon to potentially make his debut in the first team during a European match.
Chido Obi is ineligible for the tournament after being omitted from the squad. Since he joined Manchester United from Arsenal during the summer transfer window, he cannot be added to the UEFA B list, which means he will not be able to participate for the remainder of the season.
