Manchester United icon Bryan Robson has advised Bruno Fernandes to refrain from a particular behavior during matches. In January 2020, Fernandes transferred from Sporting Clube de Portugal to United for a reported fee of £67.6 million. Since his arrival, the midfielder has become a beloved figure among fans and has played a crucial role within the team.
To date, Fernandes has netted 95 goals in 277 appearances across all competitions. In the current 2024/25 season, he has recorded 16 goals and 15 assists in 44 matches. Despite his impressive performance, Robson has encouraged Fernandes to eliminate one aspect of his game.
In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, as reported by BetSelect, Robson stated, “I hope he avoids rolling over when tackled and similar actions. However, he is starting to establish himself as a captain. I believe the manager has instructed him to be a leader on the field. You can see him communicating with teammates, indicating, ‘This is our plan because this is what the manager wants.’ He appears to be motivating the players, advising them on their positioning. I hope he continues this approach, as it is essential.”
Robson further remarked, “If you possess a good footballing intellect and are performing well, and the manager has appointed you as captain, it is your responsibility to maximize the potential of those around you and ensure they adhere to the manager’s directives. I believe Bruno has met my expectations of a United captain to some extent. Unfortunately, the team has not been performing at a level that allows them to secure as many major trophies as Manchester United should.”
He continued, “Fernandes has been in exceptional form over the past two months. His confidence is evident in his play. He is thoroughly enjoying the game right now and is making a significant impact. Confidence can greatly influence performance. Players require confidence, and when combined with their abilities, it can lead to substantial improvements in their game.”
