Despite Premier League interest, Mason Greenwood, a star for Marseille, has stated his wish to stay with the team for their forthcoming Champions League campaign next season.
A surprise departure from the French team has been suggested for the former Manchester United forward. Greenwood has scored 19 goals in France’s top level during his impressive debut season with the Ligue 1 team.
After spending a year on loan with La Liga team Getafe, Greenwood was acquired by Marseille for almost £26 million last summer. He made the move after being benched from the United team due to accusations of violence, attempted rape, and coercive and controlling behavior.
In February 2023, however, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped these charges.
Since then, the 23-year-old striker has been working to restore his career, and because to his ability to score goals, he has mainly been successful in France. According to the Mirror, the team is on the verge of placing second, only behind rivals PSG, thanks to his efforts, which have helped them guarantee a position in the Champions League next season.
According to recent rumors, Greenwood was “yearning” to return to the Premier League, and two unidentified clubs were thinking about making a move for the England international.
But Greenwood has stated that he feels “at home” in Marseille and is happy in France. He said during a news conference that he and his teammates plan to play in Europe’s premier league the following season.
“I hope to be here next year for the Champions League,” Greenwood said during a rare press conference, expressing his desire to remain with the team. The stadium is unique, according to every other player. We’ve accomplished our goal, and I believe this season has been really great.”
He went on to discuss his own bond with the city, stating: “I feel comfortable here. My girlfriend and I just had a baby here. I want to thank all of my teammates and coaches because not many people get to experience that kind of stuff here.”
According to the Telegraph, insiders at Marseille are amenable to Greenwood joining another team in the upcoming two seasons.
Fans and manager Roberto De Zerbi have criticized Greenwood for his work rate despite his stellar goal-scoring record. De Zerbi has already expressed his expectations of the player, and there have been rumors that teammate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg asked for his removal from the squad.
De Zerbi earlier this year said: “No one can have more respect for him than I do. But that doesn’t change anything: I expect more from him. He has to do more, because what he is currently showing is not enough.”
He added: “If he wants to achieve his ambition of becoming a champion, he has to be more consistent, sacrifice more and be more determined.”
