Mason Greenwood: Former Man United striker set to leave Olympique Marseille after an incredible first season following a surprise fallout with the coach

Former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood is expected to leave Olympique de Marseille this summer despite a strong first campaign in Ligue 1.

This is according to pundit Ludovic Obraniak (via le10sport).

Initially, the move appeared to suit both parties. Greenwood made an explosive start at the Velodrome, quickly becoming a key part of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans and registering impressive numbers.

The forward has scored 17 goals and provided three assists in 30 appearances across all competitions so far this season, a return that has kept him among the top performers at the club statistically.

However, his performances have drawn mixed reviews in recent weeks

Critics have pointed to a visible drop in involvement, particularly in his defensive work and pressing – both crucial elements of De Zerbi’s system.

Speaking on L’Équipe du Soir on Sunday evening, former Poland international Obraniak claimed Greenwood is already preparing for a summer exit, suggesting the player views Marseille as a springboard rather than a long-term home.

“Greenwood had a very satisfactory first part of the season and is now delivering an extremely average second part,” Obraniak said. “He’s still persona non grata in England, and no Premier League club wants him. Marseille took a big risk by signing him.”

The pundit acknowledged Greenwood’s contributions but questioned his mindset. “He’s a soloist. He’s producing the numbers – 17 goals, three assists – but I don’t see him committing in the long term. He’s using Marseille to relaunch his career elsewhere.”

The People’s Person earlier covered a report claiming a fallout between Greenwood and coach De Zerbi.

Despite the mixed perceptions, Greenwood has been a consistent attacking threat for Marseille.

His ability to produce moments of individual brilliance has earned him admiration, even if concerns linger about his all-round application.

His future now appears increasingly uncertain. Greenwood remains under contract at OM, but interest from other European clubs is likely to emerge if he continues to perform at this level.

With no route back to United and his status in English football still unresolved, the next move in Greenwood’s career may take him further across the continent
