Mason Greenwood Man United reunion set as talks confirmed – ‘I am very confident’

Steve McClaren expresses optimism regarding a potential reunion with Mason Greenwood, noting that he has maintained regular communication with the former Manchester United player and his family.

Greenwood departed from United in mid-July, completing a permanent transfer valued at approximately £26.6 million after spending the previous season on loan at Getafe. Subsequently, McClaren left his position as the club’s assistant coach in early August to assume the role of head coach for the Jamaica men’s national team.

Previously, Greenwood represented the England men’s senior team, making his sole appearance as a late substitute in September 2020 during a Nations League match in Iceland. Consequently, he must change his national allegiance to compete for another team.

Earlier this month, Mark Bullingham, the chief executive of The Football Association, confirmed that Greenwood had formally requested to make this switch. “To my knowledge—though I would need to verify this—he has asked to change his national affiliation,” Bullingham stated. “This request has been made officially.”

Nevertheless, the BBC reports that the process is still in progress, as the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has not yet received the required documentation for Greenwood to represent them. As a result, he is not included in their squad for the Concacaf Gold Cup qualifiers against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

McClaren, though, remains confident Greenwood still wants to play for the Reggae Boyz. “We are in contact with him and his family all the time,” the Jamaica head coach has said.

“I am very confident he only wants to play for Jamaica. It is up to him when he moves forward with that; the ball is in his court.”
