‘One to watch’: Man United’s move for Rodri-like midfielder still on the cards ahead of summer window

Manchester United is anticipated to experience a highly active summer transfer window, with significant changes planned for the squad.

Under the ownership of INEOS, the Red Devils have implemented several controversial adjustments behind the scenes, aimed at alleviating the club’s financial strain, which includes the dismissal of hundreds of staff members.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe also plans to offload fringe players to decrease the wage expenditure and generate funds for new acquisitions.

Regarding incoming players, the club is expected to support Ruben Amorim in his efforts to rebuild the squad, with several important signings anticipated across various positions.

One of the players rumored to be making a return is former United academy graduate and England midfielder Angel Gomes.

Man United still in contention to sign Angel Gomes

The Red Devils are encountering significant competition from Tottenham, who are actively pursuing Gomes. Although the player has already declined a transfer to West Ham (as reported by The Guardian), Spurs appears to be a strong contender, with indications that club chairman Daniel Levy is personally committed to acquiring the midfielder.

Despite Tottenham’s keen interest, Ben Jacobs maintains that Manchester United remains a contender for his signature. In a conversation with GiveMeSport, Jacobs acknowledged Spurs’ solid interest in Gomes but emphasized that the Red Devils should not be dismissed from the competition. He stated:

“I wouldn’t rule out Manchester United making a move to re-sign Gomes, and that is certainly something to keep an eye on.

“Thus, we cannot definitively say that Spurs have an unobstructed path to Gomes, although they are among the clubs that are genuinely interested.

“I would also be surprised if West Ham were successful with their bid, despite the relatively attractive financial terms being offered.”

Angel Gomes has been likened with Man City midfielder Rodri

Gomes has gained significant recognition in France since departing Manchester United on a free transfer in 2020. The 24-year-old has become an integral member of the Lille team in recent years, featuring in 134 matches for the club, during which he has netted 10 goals and provided 19 assists across all competitions.

His midfield performances have drawn comparisons to Manchester City’s Rodri. Paul McGuinness, Gomes’ former youth coach at Manchester United, commended the player’s capacity to dominate the midfield, akin to the Spanish international.

“A Frenkie de Jong who can receive the ball off the back four and then move away, use disguises and so on. Someone who has those skills to receive the ball with their back to goal to start the play and keep control,” McGuinness told Sky Sports.

“We’ve seen Rodri do it for Spain and Man City. That’s one profile that we would be trying to promote within our country to try and improve.

“We searched within the FA to try and improve that type of midfield player. That’s the type of player Angel is.”

Angel Gomes senior stats Appearances Goals Assists
Attacking midfield 108 28 24
Central midfield 52 5 8
Left midfield 24 5 5

His ability to play across various positions in the midfield making him a valuable asset for any side. With him available on a free transfer, he should be a no-brainer signing for Amorim.
