Manchester United legend Paul Scholes didn’t hold back when asked to comment on Andre Onana ahead of the Europa League clash with Lyon.
On Thursday night, United welcomed Ligue 1 side Lyon to Old Trafford for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash.
After a dreadful performance in the first leg, which ended as a 2-2 draw, all eyes going into United’s home leg were on goalkeeper Andre Onana, who mounted pressure on his side ahead of the tie.
But before the second leg got underway on Thursday, United great Scholes added to the pressure on the Cameroonian after making a brutal comment about his time at Old Trafford.
Going into the first leg at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium, Onana spoke to the media and made the controversial claim that his side should progress as they had a much better team.
Following this, the United goalkeeper was at fault for both goals conceded by his side in Lyon, leading to Scholes suggesting that his teammates should avoid allowing him to get involved at the crucial home tie.
Speaking on TNT Sports about Onana, the former United midfielder said: “Keep the ball away from him. Honestly, don’t even pass it back to him… get the ball up to Højlund.”
Scholes’ comments were echoed by former teammate and fellow pundit Rio Ferdinand, who added: “I quite liked playing with goalkeepers who I don’t want to see or hear much. I don’t want to worry about them.
“The thing is when confidence goes you need to play games and no one talk about you. You don’t want the spotlight on you in games.
“When you’re called upon make the save, get up and go on with it quickly. None of those flashy things, because that’s when problems start arising.”
