Report: Arsenal set £67m asking price for “sensational” star as Real Madrid eye summer move

Arsenal has established a valuation of £67 million for defender Riccardo Calafiori, following interest from the renowned Spanish club Real Madrid, as reported by CaughtOffside.

In July, the Gunners acquired the Italian defender from Bologna for an estimated fee of £42 million. Calafiori committed to a five-year contract with Arsenal and has quickly become a significant member of Mikel Arteta’s team, even though he is not always a regular starter.

Calafiori’s adaptability has proven beneficial for manager Mikel Arteta, providing tactical options within the team’s defensive configuration. He is capable of playing as a centre-back on the left side and can also transition into midfield when necessary. Additionally, the former Bologna player has demonstrated his ability to advance and contribute to offensive plays in the attacking third.

The Gunners want £67m

A report from CaughtOffside indicates that Real Madrid is interested in acquiring Arsenal defender Calafiori. The Italian centre-back would command a fee of approximately €80 million (£67 million) if Arsenal were to permit his departure during the summer transfer window.

Despite being a significant part of the Arsenal team, Calafiori has only made 11 Premier League starts since his arrival, largely due to the rise of Myles Lewis-Skelly at left-back, which has limited his opportunities for regular play. Additionally, displacing William Saliba and Gabriel in central defense is likely to be a formidable challenge, given the strong partnership they have developed over the years.

Should Carlo Ancelotti’s team present a substantial offer, it would not be surprising for Arsenal to consider a sale. While Calafiori’s versatility is an asset, he has not been a first-choice player in either central defense or left-back positions this season.

Calafiori, who has been praised as ‘sensational’ by analyst Ben Mattinson, may be feeling frustrated with his limited playing time under Arteta this season. The Italian international has faced several injury setbacks that have hindered his development, and it appears that Lewis-Skelly, Gabriel, and Saliba are unlikely to be displaced from Arsenal’s starting lineup in the foreseeable future.
