Report: Man United eye summer swoop for 32-goal attacker who could follow in Bruno Fernandes footsteps

Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, is reportedly considering a reunion with Sporting Lisbon forward Trincao this summer.

The 25-year-old has demonstrated remarkable performance for the Green and Whites in the 2024-25 season, netting nine goals and providing 15 assists across 43 matches in all competitions, which includes eight goals and 12 assists in 26 games in Portugal’s top division.

Trincao has prior experience in England, having spent the 2021-22 season on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers from Barcelona, where he made 30 appearances, including 28 in the Premier League.

Although he struggled to leave a significant impact at Molineux, contributing only three goals and one assist, he has excelled since his transfer to Lisbon, accumulating 32 goals and 29 assists in 143 matches.

As reported by The Mirror, Amorim has pinpointed Trincao as a key target for the upcoming summer transfer window, with the Portugal international being sought after in a deal valued at £30 million.

Man United ‘eyeing £30m summer deal for Trincao’

The report indicates that Manchester United is likely to seek at least one new wide player this summer, as Marcus Rashford is anticipated to depart permanently, with Aston Villa being the most probable destination for him at a fee of £40 million.

In addition, Antony has performed exceptionally well during his loan at Real Betis since his winter transfer, and there is a possibility that the Brazilian will make a permanent move to Manuel Pellegrini’s team in the upcoming transfer window.

Jadon Sancho is also expected to finalize a £25 million transfer to Chelsea, as the Blues are obligated to acquire him at the end of his loan period. However, recent reports suggest that the London club is contemplating a £5 million payment to terminate this agreement.

Although Manchester United is currently facing financial challenges, their anticipated expenditures are expected to enable them to make new signings this summer. Trincao, who netted twice for Portugal in their 5-2 victory over Denmark in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday night, has reportedly become a key target for the club due to his outstanding performances.

Would Trincao be a good signing for Man United?

Sporting is anticipated to face significant challenges in retaining Trincao this summer, as both Arsenal and Newcastle United are reportedly interested in acquiring him for the Premier League.

Additionally, Barcelona is believed to have included a buy-back clause in the agreement that transferred him to Sporting from Camp Nou in 2023, indicating that Manchester United will encounter strong competition for his acquisition.

It is easy to see why the Red Devils are interested in Trincao, who is a highly adaptable forward, having played in various roles for Sporting this season.

Importantly, he can function as a number 10 in a 3-4-3 formation, making him an ideal fit for Amorim’s tactical approach. He has also been utilized in a central position this season, netting four goals and providing two assists in 12 starts from that role.

Moreover, Manchester United is unlikely to need to spend excessively to secure the Portuguese player this summer, and he could potentially follow in the footsteps of Bruno Fernandes, becoming a vital asset for the 20-time English champions.
