Ruben Amorim says Man Utd have a ‘leader’ who’s ‘really quiet’ but ‘everybody listens’ to, he’s different to Bruno Fernandes

The Manchester United team is poised for a significant reduction in personnel during the forthcoming summer transfer window, making the remaining matches of the current season essentially a trial for each player.

Every aspect, from skill to fitness, will be scrutinized, and any player who can demonstrate exceptional value will be highly regarded.

Ruben Amorim has consistently emphasized the importance of having multiple “leaders” within the squad, beyond just Bruno Fernandes, whom he has praised on numerous occasions.

He has now disclosed that, in addition to Fernandes, there is another leader in the team whose approach to leadership contrasts sharply with that of the Portuguese player, yet remains remarkably effective.

Ruben Amorim on Man Utd’s ‘really quiet’ leader

In the context of the current Manchester United squad, Bruno Fernandes distinctly excels in leadership qualities compared to his teammates.

Nonetheless, his approach to captaincy does not resonate with everyone, as his visible frustration on the field often attracts criticism from figures such as Roy Keane and others.

Those who criticize Fernandes may appreciate the remarks made by Amorim regarding another influential figure in the locker room, who, despite his infrequent speech, commands significant respect when he does choose to speak.

In a recent interview with TNT, the Manchester United manager noted that Noussair Mazraoui tends to be “very quiet” in the dressing room, yet “everyone listens” when he contributes to the conversation.

He said: “Nous [Mazraoui] is really quiet but you can feel it when he talks, everybody listens. So we have these kinds of leaders in the dressing room, but we need confidence. When we are winning, everyone is going to show a different side of themselves.”

Noussair Mazraoui is crown jewel of a successful window

This is not the first occasion on which Amorim has expressed high regard for Mazraoui. Recently, he referred to Mazraoui as the “future” of the club, and the Moroccan’s performances, irrespective of his position on the field, have reinforced this assertion.

Considering his transfer fee and his unexpected consistency—especially given his previous injury issues in Germany—he has emerged as a standout asset during what is proving to be a highly successful initial transfer window under Ineos’s management.

In the same interview, Amorim also commended another influential figure in the locker room, Matthijs de Ligt, who is also an Ineos acquisition. He remarked, “Matta [de Ligt] aspires to be a leader. While he may not lead in the same manner as Bruno, he possesses a distinct leadership style through his work ethic.”

Having varied leadership approaches within the dressing room is a formula for long-term success, and for United to secure two such leaders in a single transfer window highlights their effective business strategy.

May this success continue for many years ahead!
