Manchester United experienced a disappointing 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge yesterday. The Red Devils began strongly against the Blues, showcasing impressive high pressing.
However, they were unable to maintain this momentum after halftime. The home team gained confidence and ultimately scored the decisive goal through Marc Cucurella.
Bruno Fernandes once again stood out for the Red Devils, delivering an excellent cross to Harry Maguire in the first half. Although Maguire scored, he was ruled marginally offside by VAR.
Fernandes displayed remarkable intensity until his substitution and is expected to play a significant role in the upcoming Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.
He has scored three goals and provided two assists against Spurs in his last 11 encounters, making his creativity crucial for United’s success at San Mames.
United legend Roy Keane has been critical of Fernandes throughout the season but has now acknowledged that the 30-year-old could be a game-changer.
After United’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, Keane expressed confidence in United’s chances against Spurs, citing their history of winning major finals.
He also highlighted Fernandes, recognizing that the Red Devils’ captain has the ability to deliver ‘that bit of magic’ needed to secure victory against Spurs in Bilbao.
Keane said: “You still have to fancy United, someone like Bruno can produce, the history of Manchester United still carries a little bit of weight.”
“There’s not much between them [in the league] but come the crunch, come the final, United’s history in finals, them winning cups the last few years.
“You’d like to think they would have a bit more knowledge around the game than Spurs.
“That might edge it for them, and I think Bruno can produce that bit of magic.”
Fernandes, praised as ‘exceptional’ by his teammate Casemiro, has delivered another commendable season, achieving 19 goals and 19 assists across 55 matches in all competitions.
The Portugal international experienced a somewhat sluggish beginning to the season; however, his performance has been outstanding in the latter stages under the guidance of head coach Ruben Amorim. Fernandes has frequently excelled in the number eight position, having played in a similar capacity recently.
Mason Mount and Amad Diallo occupied the attacking midfield roles. We expect the captain to return to his favored number 10 position in the upcoming match against Spurs, with Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro likely to be reunited in central midfield.
