‘The right way’ – National team boss makes Denmark promise to Manchester United star Chido Obi

Denmark manager Brian Riemer has indicated that he would not rush Manchester United youngster Chido Obi into the national team’s senior squad.

Obi has just made the step up to the first team at Old Trafford, appearing as a substitute in each of United’s last three games. He made his debut as a late substitute in a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur about a fortnight ago.

The youngster, who joined United from Arsenal last year, was left out of the Under-18s’ FA Youth Cup quarter-final win over the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night due to his availability for the first-team’s FA Cup match against Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The 17-year-old striker is regarded as one of the most promising players emerging from United’s academy and is expected to have a great future. However, on the international level, he qualifies to play for both Denmark and Nigeria, therefore his international future remains uncertain. He has also represented England at the Under-16 level.

Currently playing for Denmark’s Under-18s, the Danes may be blamed for wanting to tie him down as soon as possible. However, Riemer has stated that they must “do it the right way” and not rush his development.

“Can I start by saying that I really think we’re telling a fantastic story here,” Riemer stated, as reported by Tipsbladet.

“Consider how many times we’ve met with a Danish national team and said, ‘We’re low on players; when will we get any strikers?’

“We have so many young players, some of them may be just young enough to break through, but it’s nice to have so many knocking on the door, I believe that’s essential to note.
