According to rumours, Ruben Amorim’s appointment at Old Trafford may have contributed to Dan Ashworth’s resignation as Manchester United’s sporting director after just five months.
This past summer, the Red Devils fought to get Ashworth to leave Newcastle and had to pay a compensation cost of about £3 million to get him off the Magpies contract.
Although Ashworth was a key player in all of Manchester United’s summer transfer activity, reporter David Ornstein has disclosed that the Red Devils have made the decision to let him go.
After Manchester United’s 3-2 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Ashworth’s resignation was decided upon in a meeting with chief executive Omar Berrada, according to Ornstein’s story for The Athletic.
In a move that would “stun staff” at Old Trafford, club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been “pivotal” to the decision. The “final agreement to end Ashworth’s contract was mutual,” the paper states.
It’s interesting to note that Ornstein’s article implied another explanation for Ashworth’s resignation. The reporter specifically mentioned that Ashworth was cited in Manchester United’s formal statement on Ten Hag’s contract extension in
In addition, Ashworth was mentioned in the press releases for each of the Red Devil’s five summer acquisitions.
