According to a Brazilian newspaper, Manchester United has expressed interest in signing Wesley Franca, a fullback for Flamengo, but they will have to contend with strong competition from its local rivals to land the player.
According to Rio de Janeiro news source Coluna Do Fla, the Red Devils have “enquired” about the 21-year-old defender as they look at ways to restructure Ruben Amorim’s team this summer.
This supports a claim made by The Peoples Person that United was keeping tabs on Wesley in anticipation of a possible summer transfer.
Although there is a developing line for Wesley’s services outside of the North West of England, the Brazil-based update claims Manchester City is prepared to make a £29 million bid to get Wesley before the Reds can strike.
Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle United are among the other Premier League teams that are reportedly interested in the flying fullback. Inter Milan and Barcelona are also mentioned as possible suitors on the continent.
Wesley has exceptional physical prowess, tremendous offensive ability, and sound defensive instincts. He is a threat going forward, ranking in the 91st percentile for successful take-ons, 86th for progressive carries, and 84th for shot-creating actions.
In Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, the wing-back position is vital since both players are expected to give width and overlap while maintaining their great defensive skills and agility to move up and down the field.
The two attacking midfielders are told to come inside, providing wide openings for the wing-backs to exploit. This is perhaps the most important requirement for a good wing-back in this setup.
Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, Amorim’s two senior right-backs, haven’t shown the offensive ability to play the right wing-back position.
Although Amad has put up the best performances in the position, the Ivorian winger is still one of United’s most potent attackers and should be positioned as close to the opponent goal as feasible.
Wesley would give Amorim a right wing-back option that would provide greater offensive threat than Dalot while allowing Mazraoui to stay in the back three and Amad to play on the front line.
However, Coluna Do Fla assert that in talks with Flamengo about their defensive gem, no other team has “made as much progress as City.” If United wants to beat their local rival to a player who could give Amorim’s team a game-changing boost, they must move swiftly and aggressively.
